We Keep Asking Students to “Pay Attention.” Maybe the Problem Is What We’re Asking Them to Pay Attention To.

There’s a sentence teachers say almost every day in Nigerian classrooms: “This child is not paying attention.”

We’ve all heard it. Maybe we’ve said it.

But here’s a question curriculum designers don’t ask enough: paying attention to what, exactly? And delivered how?

Because not every child’s brain works the same way. Some children think in words. Some think in pictures. Some think in rhythm. Some think by moving, building, and touching.

Our classrooms are built almost entirely for one type: the child who can sit still, listen to a lecture, and write notes. When a child outside that type struggles, we don’t question the method. We question the child.

That’s the part worth slowing down on.

What Arts-Integrated Learning actually means

This is not about adding music class or art class to the timetable. It’s not “let’s do something fun on Fridays.”

Arts-integrated learning means using rhythm, drawing, movement, and drama as the actual method of teaching academic content, not as a break from it.

A student clapping out 8 beats, then splitting into groups of 4, then 2, then 1, is learning fractions. A student drawing a number line as a road with stops is learning sequencing. A student acting out a market transaction is learning percentages, profit, and loss.

The art isn’t decoration on top of the lesson. The art is the lesson.

Why this matters more than it sounds

Here’s something we’ve seen repeatedly in our curriculum work: a student who has been labelled “weak” in mathematics for years can sometimes grasp a concept in minutes, once it’s delivered through a format their brain actually processes.

It’s how learning works. Information that enters through multiple channels, like sound, sight, and movement, gets stored more durably and retrieved more easily.

Why most curricula don’t do this

It’s worth being honest about why arts-integration is rare in Nigerian classrooms, and it’s not because anyone thinks it’s a bad idea.

It’s because it’s harder to design.

A worksheet-based lesson is simple to produce. Write the questions, print, distribute, done. One format works for everyone, at least on paper.

An arts-integrated lesson requires more planning. The teacher needs an alternative way to introduce the same concept. The lesson plan needs to account for movement, sound, or visual representation, not just text.

Most curriculum writers don’t build this in because it takes more effort, and the system has never required it.

What this looks like in a real classroom

A few examples we’ve worked with:

Before introducing the formal definition of a fraction, students clap out rhythmic patterns and physically divide groups of objects, beans, bottle caps, and stones into equal parts. The vocabulary comes after the experience, not before.

Before teaching coordinate geometry, students create a “human grid” in the classroom or schoolyard, physically walking to coordinates called out by the teacher.

Before solving word problems about money, students act out a market scene like buying, selling, calculating change, and using real or play currency.

In each case, the academic concept is the same as what’s in the textbook. What’s different is the entry point.

The bigger point

When a child consistently struggles in a traditional classroom setup, the system tends to ask: What’s wrong with this child?

Arts-integrated learning asks a different question: what’s wrong with how we’re delivering this?

That single shift in framing changes everything about how curriculum is built and how many children get written off before anyone tries a different door.

This is one of the frameworks we work with at SomNg when designing curriculum for schools and NGOs, building lessons that meet students through the channels they actually learn best in, not just the ones that are easiest to print.
